What are Runes?
The Elder Futhark Runes are an early form of written language. While their exact origins are unknown, scholars often suggest an influence from Italic alphabets or from earlier Bronze-age pictographic and symbolic traditions. I write about the Elder Futhark, which is the earliest of the known Rune-sets.
Runes have been used both as letters to spell words, and as symbols containing greater meaning. By referencing familiar objects and experiences — such as water, hail, fire, seeds, cattle, breath, the sun, and family — they became archetypes, which today are harbingers of larger concepts — such as life force, creative flow, wealth management, language, consequences, and community.
Clearly, their exact sources, steeped in cultural tradition and mythology, are not known with certainty. Yet, no matter how they originated, Runes have survived through a long and storied stretch of human history and their use continues to be widespread today in a variety of manners, including:• As a form of writing• Tools for divination and fortune-telling• Magical talismans for focusing power• Depositories of ancient wisdom informing the human experience
While all of these applications are valid and many practitioners (myself included) find value in each approach, the last usage – ancient wisdom informing the human experience – is where I tend to focus my energies by finding ways that these archetypal concepts can be relevant, helpful, and yes, empowering to women and men in their everyday lives.
